TACLOBAN CITY — A minor was left unnoticed before her/his body was discovered floating in a swimming pool in a beach resort in Abuyog, Leyte, yesterday, November 26.

According to a police report from Abuyog police, they received a call from Thelma Dandoy, owner of the beach resort, who reported that around 6:00 pm while other people in the resort were swimming and partying she noticed a body floating on the edge of a swimming pool.

Dandoy immediately called the attention of the family and nearby emergency response services, including the Abuyog Rescue unit.

The rescuers eventually tried to resuscitate the kid but failed. Later on, they took the victim to the Abuyog District Hospital but unfortunately, the doctors declared the victim as "dead on arrival."

The child was a resident of Mayorga, Leyte, according to investigators.

Health experts have warned that the common causes of child drowning are due to being neglected or abused. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated in the year 2004 that 174,000 children worldwide died due to drowning.

According to WHO in a report, drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional death in children and youth globally. iTacloban
