TACLOBAN — The Department of Public Works and Highways – Eastern Samar District Engineering Office (ESDEO) assists victims of Typhoon Odette in St. Bernard, Southern Leyte, through DPWH Operation Malasakit on December 30, 2021.
Nearly 500 households in Barangays Himbangan, Hindag-an, and Lipanto have benefited from the relief operation led by District Engineer Ma. Margarita C. Junia.
According to District Engineer Junia, these selected barangays were severely impacted by Typhoon Odette on December 16, 2021, with the typhoon destroying most of their houses.
The district office head initiated the relief operation in Southern Leyte after witnessing the aftermath of Typhoon Odette last December 19-22, 2021, during the clearing operation they conducted with the DPWH Eastern Samar maintenance crew.
Additionally, the Rank and File Employees Association (RAFEA), section heads, and employees of DPWH Eastern Samar contributed cash, gently used clothing, and sacks of rice to the relief effort. Others assisted in the packaging and distribution of relief supplies.
“This is our opportunity to help our neighboring province. I understand that the Estehanons experienced the same during the wrath of typhoons Yolanda and Ruby in the previous years, which is why Eastern Samar DEO is very passionate in organizing this relief operation to extend help to the victims of Typhoon Odette,” DE Junia added.
DE Junia added that while the items being distributed may be few, they will undoubtedly assist several families in surviving for a couple of days while they recover from the typhoon's aftermath. (Source: DPWH-8)
