Lyrid meteor shower to peak Friday night –PAGASA

Ready your wishes as the Lyrid meteor shower will peak this Friday night, April 22, according to PAGASA.

Prepare your wishes because, according to PAGASA, the Lyrids meteor shower, which is known for leaving a lasting impression in the sky, will peak this Friday night, April 22.

"The Lyrids meteor shower will be visible from April 16 to 25, with the peak of activity expected on April 22. The meteor shower can be seen when Hercules, the meteor shower's radiant, rises around 9:17 PM nightly and remains active until 5:14 AM the next day," PAGASA said.

The weather bureau added, "The radiant is highest in the sky at around 4:00 AM. Thus, the shower will produce the best display shortly before dawn, with up to 18 observable meteors per hour."

The meteor shower is best seen late in the evening of April 22 and early in the morning of April 23. The shower, which began on April 14 and is expected to last until April 30, is expected to last until April 30.

Following the Lyrids, there will be ten meteor showers that will peak this year. Here's a rundown of the remaining showers to keep an eye out for this year:

  • Eta Aquariids: May 4 to 5, 2022;
  • Southern delta Aquariids: July 29 to 30, 2022;
  • Alpha Capricornids: July 30 to 31, 2022;
  • Perseids: August 11 to 12, 2022;
  • Orionids: October 20 to 21, 2022;
  • Southern Taurids: November 4 to 5, 2022;
  • Northern Taurids: November 11 to 12, 2022;
  • Leonids: November 17 to 18, 2022;
  • Geminids: December 13 to 14; and
  • Ursids: December 21 to 22.
