With the completion of four flood control projects implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways in Southern Leyte, the problem of overflowing and erosion will be addressed.
The villages of Tuburan (Php 4, 924,360.00), Basak (P4.95 million), and Maria Clara (P2,935,479.39) in Maasin City, as well as Amparo village (P49 million) in Macrohon town, have completed flood control projects.
"These flood mitigation structures are used to divert water flows by redirecting rivers and slowing natural changes in embankments, which lessens damage to physical structures and protects lives and properties," District Engineer Manolo Rojas explained.
For 2022, DPWH Southern Leyte is implementing 24 flood control projects totaling Php 921,561,767.47 to protect vulnerable urban and agricultural communities from flooding and erosion.
As of September, 20 projects were still active, all with positive project outcomes. Seven of the 20 flood control projects are in Maasin City, three in Hinunangan and Libagon towns, two in Bontoc, and one in Saint Bernard, Silago, Pintuyan, Sogod, and Hinundayan.
The Department's priority development projects always include the construction of a flood control system. Flood control structures not only prevent flooding in river-adjacent areas, but they also protect riverbanks from scouring and erosion. —iTacloban (Source: DPWH-8)
