TACLOBAN CITY – Coastal areas in Eastern Visayas tested positive for red tide, according to the latest red tide advisory issued by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) this Friday, November 4, 2022.
San Pedro Bay in Basey, Samar, as well as the coastal waters of Guiuan, Eastern Samar, are among those affected by Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning toxin or red tide, based on the BFAR advisory.
Red tide toxin is still present in samples from Cancabato Bay in Tacloban City and Irong-Irong Bay in Catbalogan City, Samar.
"Shellfish meat samples from San Pedro Bay (Basey, Samar) and the coastal waters of Guiuan, Eastern Samar tested POSITIVE for paralytic shellfish toxin (saxitoxin). While seawater samples from Cancabato Bay (Tacloban City) and Irong-irong Bay (Catbalogan City, Samar) continue to be POSITIVE for the toxic microorganism that causes Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP)," BFAR said.
In this regard, BFAR advised the public to avoid harvesting, purchasing, and eating any shellfish and to be aware of the beaches in question.
The agency further clarified that eating fish, squid, shrimp, and crab from these areas is safe. —iTacloban
