The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Biliran District Engineering Office (DEO) recently completed the construction of a Php 24.5-M flood control structure in Almeria town, upstream of the Bagongbong River.

The project entails the construction of a levee with reinforced concrete facing in two locations along the Bagongbong river, totaling 414 linear meters in length.

According to OIC-District Engineer (DE) Alfredo L. Bollido, the completed project will prevent flooding in the town's residential zones and farmlands during heavy rains.

“It was observed that during heavy rainfall and calamities, this river along Bagongbong would most likely overflow to the national road making the highways impassable to the travelling public. It does not only cause inconvenience to the motorists but also damages to the adjacent rice fields and poses danger to the residents,” said OIC-DE Bollido.

“With the completion of the project, it will provide a structure that will avert flooding thereby preventing damage to the lives, properties and the existing national road and bridge located along the national highway,” OIC-DE Bollido added.

Ms. Domingga A. Montiadora, a resident of Sitio Salug, Bagongbong, Almeria, thanked the DPWH for the flood mitigation project.

“Lahi na kay naa namay control, ibig sabihin makasagang na siya sa tubig, safety na ang naa sa igbaw kay dili naman muabot ang tubig. Salamat kaayo sa DPWH sa inyong gihimo nga control.”

“Compared before, it is now much better because there is already a structure that can control the flood and protect us because the water will no longer overflow. Thank you, DPWH, for the flood control structure,” Ms. Montiadora said. (Source: DPWH-8)
