TACLOBAN CITY – On the ninth-anniversary commemoration of the onslaught of Super Typhoon Yolanda, residents of Tacloban light up the city streets in remembrance of the people who lost their lives on that tragic day.
As more people took part in the activity, the darkness was eclipsed by glowing candles.
Those who lived in the part of Barangay Magallanes that was considered the ground zero of the Super Typhoon erected a memorial for their departed family members and friends.
After participating in the ninth-year novena, the community came together for a meal, which was referred to as a "tapos." This marked the end of the period of mourning.
One can see young children and their parents lighting candles all along Real Street as a way of passing on the lessons that have been brought about as a result of the devastation.
During a mass that was held to commemorate the ninth year since Super Typhoon Yolanda, Msgr. Erlito Maraya delivered a homily in which he shared: "Do not let Yolanda destroy you. Let Yolanda create a better you, a better me, and a better us." —iTacloban (with reports from TCIO)
