TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) recently held a stakeholder meeting in Tacloban City to discuss its plans for boosting the city's ICT ecosystem. Attendees included Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez, city councilor Christopher Randy Esperas, and representatives from the academe, NGAs, and private sector.
During the meeting, the DICT presented its digital cities program, which aims to improve the local talent, infrastructure, and business environment for the Information Technology-Business Process Management industry. The program also aims to advance the digital economy in Tacloban City.
In addition to the digital cities program, the stakeholders also discussed the importance of creating an ICT council to further develop the local ICT ecosystem. This council would be responsible for coordinating the efforts of various stakeholders, including the government, private sector, and academia, for ensuring the success of the digital cities program.
Digital cities, also known as smart cities, are urban areas that use information and communication technologies (ICT) to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors.
These technologies can include broadband internet, sensors, and other forms of digital infrastructure to collect and analyze data, which can then be used to optimize city services and decision-making. The goal of digital cities is to create more efficient, sustainable, and livable urban environments.
The stakeholder meeting is a positive step towards improving Tacloban City's ICT ecosystem and advancing its digital economy. The DICT's digital cities program and the proposed ICT council are both important initiatives that will help the city capitalize on the opportunities presented by the digital age.
