TACLOBAN CITY – Leyte Normal University (LNU) has triumphed at the recently concluded State Colleges, and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Region 8 meet, held at Southern Leyte State University from November 29 to December 1, 2022.
LNU came out on top among the other 10 state universities and colleges (SUCs) in the region, earning a total of 31 medals – 21 gold and 10 silver. This marks the seventh time LNU has won the event in the last seven years and the first time in two years due to the restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In spite of the challenges, LNU was able to secure first place thanks to its athletes' hard work and dedication, as well as the administration's and local community's support.
"Despite the two-year hiatus from the conduct of the SCUAA games because of the pandemic, we still garnered the highest number of medals," said LNU President Dr. Evelyn Aguirre in her congratulatory message for the SCUAA athletes.
"Indeed, with proper preparation, and fervent prayers, anything is possible! It is the will of God that Leyte Normal University conquered and continues to overcome the challenges of the pandemic, and the university's win in the 2022 Regional SCUAA is a manifestation of that," she added.
The SCUAA meet aims to promote physical fitness and sportsmanship among Eastern Visayas SUC students. The meet has grown in popularity and scope since its inception, with more schools and athletes participating each year. Each year, the regional meet is held in different areas throughout Eastern Visayas, with Southern Leyte State University hosting this year's edition.
It features a wide range of sports and recreational activities, including track and field, basketball, volleyball, swimming, badminton, and chess. The participating schools compete in both individual and team events, intending to earn the most medals and ultimately claim the top spot.
The victory of LNU is a welcome reprieve from the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic and serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination of the LNU community.
This year's SCUAA meet was highly anticipated, as it marked the return of the event after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
