The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has announced that they will be sticking to the deadline for voter registration, which is set for January 31st.
Comelec Chairman, George Erwin Garcia, said in a media interview that under ordinary circumstances, it is not a good idea to always extend deadlines so that the poll body will be sticking to the January 31st deadline.
He emphasized that there should be no more excuses for people not registering, and all Comelec offices nationwide are open to accepting voter registrations from Mondays to Saturdays.
Garcia added that the poll body has fully informed the public regarding the registration, and the current circumstances do not warrant an extension.
He mentioned that they only suspended voter registration in some areas due to flooding, and they can grant an extension given that scenario.
As of now, a total of 1,028,000 people have registered, and the Comelec is hoping to get 1.5 million to 2 million registrants in the whole voting period from December 12 to January 31.
