TACLOBAN CITY – The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in Tacloban City has announced that it has exceeded its target for the recent voter registration period. During the registration period, which lasted from December 12, 2022, to January 31, 2023, 5,467 people enlisted. This included 96 people who signed up through the "register anywhere project."
Atty. Ma. Goretti Cañas, Tacloban City Election Officer, revealed that the Election Registration Board (ERB) will convene from February 20 to 24, 2023, to deliberate on the approval and disapproval of applications processed during the entire voter registration period.
Once the ERB has concluded its hearing and the consolidation of records at the COMELEC database is complete, the distribution of voter certifications will commence. According to the election officer, voter certifications are tentatively set to be issued in the first week of March.
The results of the ERB hearing will also play a role in determining the number of precincts and poll workers required for the upcoming elections. The upcoming Sanggunian Kabataan (SK) and barangay elections are set to be conducted manually, leading to an expected increase in the number of poll workers for these elections compared to the national and local elections.
When asked about the likelihood of the election as scheduled on October 30, 2023, the official stated that preparations for the election would continue as planned in the absence of any legislation that could delay it. —iTacloban (Source: CIO)
