TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Agriculture (DA) in Eastern Visayas recently conducted two batches of training on cassava production in Leyte. The training was conducted through the Corn Program/ Cassava Project and was aimed at providing technical support and practical experience for farmers in the area.
Members of the Cogon Farmers Association attended the first training session on March 21-22 in Carigara, Leyte. The Quezon Jr. United Farmers Association participated at the second training session on March 23-24 in Ormoc City.
The training was part of the interventions to assist partner farmer groups in establishing technology demonstration sites this year.
As resource people, technical personnel from the Corn Program and Field Operations Division discussed cultural techniques in cassava production, such as managing and controlling pests and diseases, harvesting, and post-harvest operations.
Lectures and hands-on fieldwork were both parts of the training program. Plowing/furrowing, farm layouting, planting, and fertilizer application were all practiced by participants. The training aimed to provide farmers with the skills needed for successful cassava production by providing practical experience.
Cassava is a major crop in the Philippines and is widely grown in the Leyte region. However, pest and disease problems, as well as other cultural management issues, frequently impede cassava production.
The DA-8 hopes to improve cassava production in the region and help farmers increase their income by providing technical assistance and training.
The training participants expressed gratitude for the program, saying it provided them with valuable knowledge and skills to apply to their farms. They also thanked the DA-RFO 8 for assisting the local agricultural sector. —iTacloban (Source: DA-8)
