In a recent statement, DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte expressed her disapproval of the transport strike supported by the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT). According to her, this weeklong strike would only worsen the learning hardships of students, which goes against the current efforts of the Department of Education (DepEd) to achieve learning recovery.
Secretary Duterte emphasized that the DepEd's priority is to address the problems that the education system is facing. She added that the transport strike, which ACT supports, is an unwarranted interruption that will only add to the challenges that students and teachers are already facing.
ACT's support for the strike, in Secretary Duterte's opinion, reveals their true colors. She believes that ACT does not serve the interest of students and teachers. Duterte also accused the group of being aligned with communist ideologies and aims to keep the country's children uneducated and poor.
She challenged ACT to show its sincerity to the education sector by working with local government units and other government agencies to ensure learners' convenience during the transport strike instead of supporting it.
Secretary Duterte also assured that both in-person and alternative delivery modes of learning shall be implemented, whichever is convenient to the learners, during this communist-inspired weeklong strike.
The DepEd has been working on various initiatives to address the education system's challenges in the Philippines. Since the pandemic's start, the education sector has been significantly affected, with learning loss being a major concern.
Secretary Duterte emphasized that the DepEd's efforts to provide solutions to the problems of the education system would be hampered by the transport strike, and student's education would be disrupted.
She called on ACT to consider the impact of their actions on the education sector and work towards solutions that would benefit the learners.
