TACLOBAN CITY – To ensure a safe and smooth travel experience for motorists and the general public during Holy Week 2023, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has launched its annual "Lakbay Alalay" program. The program will be effective from April 5 to April 10, 2023.
The DPWH's district engineering offices have deployed personnel, equipment, and resources to strategic locations along major roads and highways in the country.
The Lakbay Alalay program is led by personnel from the District Maintenance Section, who have installed tents in various locations. These tents will serve as hubs for the program. They will provide quick and easy access to medical aid or traffic management services in the event of an emergency, coordinating with other agencies such as the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Philippine National Police (PNP).
District Engineer Johnny Acosta of DPWH Tacloban City District Engineering Office (DPWH-TCDEO) emphasized the office's commitment to public safety and comfort during the busy Holy Week. He urges all travelers to take advantage of the Lakbay Alalay program and approach the nearest tent for any assistance.
Similarly, DPWH Southern Leyte Sub-District Engineering Office (DPWH SL Sub-DEO), DPWH Leyte 5th District Engineering Office (DPWH-5DEO), and DPWH Northern Samar First DEO have also activated their Lakbay Alalay program to provide assistance to travelers, motorists, and the general public.
District Engineer Eduardo V. Santos of DPWH SL Sub-DEO noted the program's importance in ensuring that travelers and motorists can reach their destinations safely and without major delays. He added that the program is just one of the many initiatives of the DPWH aimed at improving the country's infrastructure and transportation systems.
Meanwhile, District Engineer Eusebio T. Culas of DPWH-5DEO directed the maintenance chief to assign maintenance personnel and service vehicles in major junctions along the national highway to immediately assist the traveling public. He assured the public that DPWH Leyte 5th District Engineering Office is ready to serve the traveling public.
DPWH Northern Samar First DEO has announced that its motorist assistance program will be available at strategic locations starting from 8:00 am on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, and will continue to operate until 5:00 pm on Monday, April 10, 2023. District Engineer Mario D. Villena confirmed the program's implementation, which aims to assist motorists in need along identified routes.
The DPWH's Lakbay Alalay program serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible travel and the need to prioritize road safety. With the help of this program, travelers and motorists can have peace of mind knowing that assistance is readily available in case of any travel-related concerns. —iTacloban
