DA recognizes potential of Philippine salt industry for economic growth

The Philippine government aims to revitalize the salt industry, boost self-sufficiency, and create sustainable livelihoods through research, legislation, and technology.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has acknowledged the potential of the salt industry to bolster the nation's economy and create sustainable livelihoods for its people. Despite challenges faced during the pandemic, the government is committed to improving the industry and unlocking its potential.

Under the DA's guidance, numerous government agencies are working together to fortify the domestic salt industry and encourage self-sufficiency in the sector. The DA's Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) contributes to research and development efforts while offering technical support to local salt producers.

To stimulate high-quality salt production, the DA-BFAR initiated the Development of Salt Industry Project (DSIP) on March 10, 2023, collaborating with the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI). The program's goal is to bridge the gap between the industry and actual commodity output.

Additionally, the DA is investigating methods to increase production areas and incorporate technologies such as evaporation systems and machinery to accelerate salt production. The agency prioritizes the establishment of processing, packaging, and value-adding facilities for disadvantaged salt producers.

Senate Bill No. 1870, sponsored by Senator Loren Legarda, aims to reinforce and rejuvenate the Philippine salt industry. The bill seeks to tackle challenges and gaps impeding the industry's competitiveness in both local and international markets while creating more jobs for salt farmers.

Senator Legarda emphasized the need for financial and technical support for salt farmers to encourage sustainable salt production using modern machinery, innovative technologies, and research and development initiatives. She also advocated for better policies and diverse cooperation among government agencies and stakeholders to develop and implement the Philippine Salt Industry Development Roadmap.

The combined efforts of the government's dedication, support from national agencies, and legislative advocacy are vital in reinvigorating the salt industry. These joint endeavors are expected to aid the country's post-pandemic economic recovery. —iTacloban
