TACLOBAN CITY – In a burst of color and excitement, Tacloban City commenced its highly anticipated month-long Fiesta celebration yesterday, June 1, at the newly established Tacloban City Carnival Park.
The festive event saw the introduction of esteemed Miss Tacloban, Ginoong Sangyaw, and Sangyaw Queen 2023 candidates, along with the presence of prominent city officials, including Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez and several councilors.
The OIC City Tourism Coordinator, Ma. Lumen Tabao, enthusiastically invited Taclobanons and visitors alike to explore the Carnival Park, a transformed venue inside the Leyte Park property. This dynamic hub will host various activities, including a carnival, barbecue stalls, an agri-trade fair, and an array of delectable food trucks. Visitors can partake in these festivities until July 6, 2023.
Among the highly anticipated events during this year's Fiesta festivities is the Sangyaw Parade of Lights on June 29. The parade will dazzle spectators with creatively adorned, brightly illuminated floats and mesmerizing dance contingents, all accompanied by the infectious beats of the "Sangyaw Theme."
Notably, the Fiesta celebration will also feature several exciting beauty pageants, including the Miss Tacloban Coronation Night on June 24 at the Tacloban City Convention Center and the Ginoong Sangyaw on June 22 at the Robinsons North Activity Area. Additionally, the Balik Tacloban Night at Pacific Point Resort on June 27 promises to be a memorable evening for all attendees.
Sports enthusiasts can look forward to the Sangyaw Adventure Race on June 16–17 and the thrilling Sangyaw Off-road Challenge on June 17, offering exciting competitions for participants and spectators.
Deeply rooted in tradition, the 134th Tacloban Fiesta includes religious activities such as the Pre-Balyuan Rites on June 18 and the 48th Balyuan Rites on June 20. These events will culminate in the traditional Fluvial and Land Processions, followed by a momentous Pontifical Mass on Fiesta Day, June 30.
The Sangyaw Festival, Tacloban City's official festival, was revitalized in 2008 under the guidance of Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez. "Sangyaw," meaning to announce important news, aptly captures the spirit of this vibrant celebration, highlighting the city's rich culture and heritage. —iTacloban (Source: CIO)
