PHILIPPINES – In a recent Laging Handa public briefing, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) revealed that the number of active SIM cards registered has surpassed 103 million, exceeding their initial target.

Deputy Commissioner Atty. Jon Paolo Salvahan expressed optimism that the number could even rise to 110 million before the upcoming deadline on July 25, 2023.

Salvahan highlighted that no further extensions would be granted beyond the current deadline based on the NTC's coordination with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

He cautioned SIM card users who failed to register before the deadline, warning them that they would temporarily lose access to their e-wallet payment service accounts. He strongly advised individuals to promptly register their SIM cards to avoid any inconvenience.

Addressing concerns about new prepaid SIM cards, Salvahan clarified that there is no specific deadline for their registration. The registration process for these cards will continue seamlessly. He explained that newly purchased prepaid SIM cards are automatically deactivated until registered, emphasizing the importance of timely registration to activate their services.

Salvahan also reassured the public that there is no limit to the number of SIM cards that can be registered as long as accurate information is provided during the registration process. This ensures that individuals can register all their SIM cards without any restrictions.

With the July 25 deadline rapidly approaching, the NTC urges the public to take immediate action and register their SIM cards promptly to avoid any inconvenience and service interruptions.  —iTacloban
