LEYTE – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Leyte 4th District Engineering Office (DEO) has begun the construction of a seawall to protect the coastal community of Sitio Lawis, Brgy. Tabgas, Albuera, Leyte.

This vital infrastructure, spanning 135 meters, aims to shield the residents from the relentless onslaught of strong waves and flooding, which have been causing severe damage to their homes and properties during typhoons.

Local resident, Mrs. Salvacion Dabalos, expressed relief about the ongoing project, saying, "Kinahanglan pa mi mu-evacuate sa eskwelahan (We would need to evacuate to the school)."

Before the construction of the seawall, the community had been living in constant distress due to their vulnerability to coastal hazards. Intense weather conditions brought about by typhoons posed significant threats to their lives and belongings, compelling them to evacuate during such events.

The seawall, funded under the General Appropriations Act (GAA) 2023, comes with a contract cost of Php 28,900,007.48. Once completed, it will serve as a formidable barrier, providing reliable protection and enhancing the safety and security of the residents in Sitio Lawis.

The infrastructure's robustness is designed to withstand the destructive effects of strong waves, mitigating the risks of damage during extreme weather events. —iTacloban (Source: DPWH-8)
