TACLOBAN CITY – A record number of over 4,000 candidates have submitted their papers to the Tacloban City Commission on Elections (COMELEC) during the six-day "filing of candidacy" period, which spanned from August 28 to September 2. This is in preparation for the Barangay & Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) 2023.
The details revealed by City COMELEC highlight that out of these filings, 336 are vying for the position of Punong Barangay, while 1,910 have set their sights on becoming Sangguniang Barangay members. For the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) positions, 750 candidates are running for the Chairmanship, and 1,276 are campaigning to be SK members.
COMELEC has taken this surge to reiterate an important guideline to the hopefuls. They emphasize that premature campaigning is strictly forbidden and can be grounds for candidate disqualification. The official campaign trail for the BSKE is set to run from October 19 to October 28, 2023.
As the election day approaches on October 30, Tacloban City anticipates the participation of 147,126 regular registered voters. Additionally, 52,654 SK voters are expected to exercise their right to vote.
Local authorities and COMELEC officials are gearing up to ensure a smooth election process for all involved, emphasizing the importance of a free and fair election. —iTacloban (Source: CIO)
