Road safety seminar a must for PUV permit renewal in Tacloban

PUV operators and drivers in Tacloban City must attend a road safety seminar before renewing their business permits for 2024.

TACLOBAN CITY – Transport operators and drivers who wish to renew their business permits for 2024 must have attended the road safety seminar conducted by the Transport Operators and Drivers Education Center (TOMECO) from November 23 to December 23, 2023.

This was the reminder of the Business Permit and Licensing Division (BPLD) during an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activity held on Thursday, December 28, at the City Hall.

The IEC aimed to inform the transport sector of the requirements and procedures for the upcoming business permit renewal, which will start on January 2, 2024, and end on January 22, 2024.

According to the BPLD, the road safety seminar is a mandatory prerequisite for the renewal of business permits as part of the city’s efforts to promote safe and responsible driving among public utility vehicle (PUV) operators and drivers.

The BPLD also clarified that the renewal of transport business permits will only take place at the Business One Stop Shop (BOSS) Building in Kanhuraw, Tacloban City, where applicants can also pay the regulatory fees and undergo the inspection of their PUVs.

The inspection of PUVs for renewal started on December 27, 2023, at the Plaza Rizal, where the BPLD and the City Traffic Operations Management and Enforcement Center (TOMEC) checked the roadworthiness and compliance of the vehicles.

Based on the data from the City Information Office, out of the 2,953 registered PUVs for 2023, only 2,346 operators and drivers participated in the road safety seminar organized by TOMECO.

The BPLD urged the remaining transport operators and drivers to attend the seminar before the deadline; otherwise, they will face penalties and sanctions for operating without a valid business permit. —iTacloban (with reports from CIO)
