TACLOBAN CITY – To combat traffic congestion, Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez has signed an executive order (2024-06-24) regulating vehicle parking along Benigno Aquino Avenue, also known as Young Field. The new order, which takes effect immediately, is part of a series of measures to ensure an orderly and systematic flow of traffic within the city.
The executive order draws on Ordinance No. 2000-01, the “Comprehensive Traffic Management Code of the City Government of Tacloban,” and the creation of the Traffic Operations, Management, Enforcement, and Control Office (TOMECO) by Ordinance No. 2009-10-252. TOMECO is tasked with the systematic traffic control and strict implementation of the traffic code under the supervision of the city mayor.
The order stipulates that no vehicles shall be allowed to park on either side of Benigno Aquino Avenue from Monday to Friday between 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. This regulation aims to address the traffic issues primarily caused by indiscriminate or improper vehicle parking, alongside other factors such as urbanization, road works, and the increasing number of vehicles and people in the city.
To facilitate the implementation, TOMECO will install or repair appropriate signages in the affected areas. Additionally, the City Information Office and other relevant agencies are directed to disseminate information regarding the new parking regulations promptly.
This executive order serves as a temporary measure and will be revoked once the revisions to the Comprehensive Traffic Management Code are incorporated. The city government’s commitment to improving traffic conditions is evident in this proactive approach, and the residents of Tacloban City can expect a more efficient traffic management system moving forward. —iTacloban
