TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Education (DepEd) has issued a memorandum announcing the celebration of Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa 2024 from August 1 to 31. This event, spearheaded by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF), aligns with Proclamation No. 1041, s. 1997 will feature the theme "FILIPINO: WIKANG MAPAGPALAYA" (Filipino: A Liberating Language).
The celebration aims to highlight the significance of the Filipino language and its historical impact. The following objectives have been set for Buwan ng Wika 2024:
- Full implementation of Presidential Proclamation No. 1041.
- Raising awareness among Filipinos about the importance of language and its history.
- Encouraging government and private agencies to participate in language and civic awareness programs.
- Motivating Filipinos to value and actively engage in activities related to the Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa.
- Introducing KWF as the government agency responsible for preserving Philippine languages through its various programs.
The memorandum outlines suggested activities for the month-long celebration, divided into weekly themes:
- August 1-3: Filipino Sign Language (FSL) towards Inclusive National Development
- August 5-10: Systematic and Scientific Research towards National Development
- August 12-17: Promotion of Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices (IKSP) through Scientific Research
- August 19-23: Indigenous Languages towards National Education
- August 26-31: Combatting Misinformation (Fact-Checking)
DepEd has emphasized the need for these activities to comply with DepEd Order No. 9, s. 2005 (Instituting Measures to Increase Engaged Time-on-Task and Ensuring Compliance Therewith), ensuring they do not disrupt regular classes. Additionally, adherence to guidelines in DepEd Order No. 66, s. 2017 (Implementing Guidelines on the Conduct of Off-Campus Activities) is required for off-campus events.
