Philippines to celebrate Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa 2024 with a focus on language, cultural awareness

TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Education (DepEd) has issued a memorandum announcing the celebration of Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa 2024 from August 1 to 31. This event, spearheaded by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF), aligns with Proclamation No. 1041, s. 1997 will feature the theme "FILIPINO: WIKANG MAPAGPALAYA" (Filipino: A Liberating Language).

The celebration aims to highlight the significance of the Filipino language and its historical impact. The following objectives have been set for Buwan ng Wika 2024:

  1. Full implementation of Presidential Proclamation No. 1041.
  2. Raising awareness among Filipinos about the importance of language and its history.
  3. Encouraging government and private agencies to participate in language and civic awareness programs.
  4. Motivating Filipinos to value and actively engage in activities related to the Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa.
  5. Introducing KWF as the government agency responsible for preserving Philippine languages through its various programs.

The memorandum outlines suggested activities for the month-long celebration, divided into weekly themes:

  • August 1-3: Filipino Sign Language (FSL) towards Inclusive National Development
  • August 5-10: Systematic and Scientific Research towards National Development
  • August 12-17: Promotion of Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices (IKSP) through Scientific Research
  • August 19-23: Indigenous Languages towards National Education
  • August 26-31: Combatting Misinformation (Fact-Checking)

DepEd has emphasized the need for these activities to comply with DepEd Order No. 9, s. 2005 (Instituting Measures to Increase Engaged Time-on-Task and Ensuring Compliance Therewith), ensuring they do not disrupt regular classes. Additionally, adherence to guidelines in DepEd Order No. 66, s. 2017 (Implementing Guidelines on the Conduct of Off-Campus Activities) is required for off-campus events.
