TACLOBAN CITY –The Tacloban City District Engineering Office (TCDEO) is close to completing retarding basins at housing projects in Brgy. 105 San Isidro, Tacloban City. These projects, funded by the 2023 General Appropriation Act with a total budget of Php 101,207,765.11, aim to enhance flood resilience in these residential areas.
Retarding basins is essential for reducing flood risks by temporarily storing excess stormwater runoff, preventing the drainage systems from becoming overwhelmed during heavy rainfall or storms. This measure protects residents and their properties from flooding and helps reduce waterborne diseases linked to stagnant floodwaters.
In addition to flood control, these basins will provide a reliable water supply for the local community. The water will be treated at a facility to be constructed following the project's completion, ensuring safety. Excess water from the basins will automatically flow into the river.
Constructed with gravity-type stone masonry and concrete paving, the basins span 748.267 linear meters, ensuring long-term durability for the community's benefit.
District Engineer Rebecca G. Yuse emphasized that the construction of these retarding basins is a crucial investment in the community's ability to handle floods, focusing on creating infrastructure that addresses current needs while also preparing for future challenges to keep residents safe and secure. ###
