TACLOBAN CITY – Eastern Visayas’ unique biodiversity has been celebrated in a vibrant new mural unveiled by local artists Kim Clinton Gonzales and Andrew Abainza, members of the KOLOR BANWA art group. The "Love Biodiversity" mural captures iconic natural spots such as Biri Larosa, Samar Island Natural Park, Calbayog-Pan-As Hayiban, Guiuan, San Juanico Bridge, Mt. Naliwatan, Lake Danao, Mahagnao Volcano, Cuatro Islas, and Sogod Bay.

The mural, supported by the Department of Tourism (DOT), is not just a creative tribute but also a call to protect these natural wonders, which are central to the region’s cultural and environmental identity. Through this artwork, the DOT and the Tacloban City government aim to foster public awareness of biodiversity preservation.

This initiative, launched just ahead of National Tourism Week and World Tourism Day, attracted the participation of DOT leaders, including Assistant Secretary Gissela Marie R. Quisumbing and Regional Director Karina Rosa S. Tiopes, and representatives from local government units and educational institutions.

How the Mural Benefits Tacloban’s Community and Environment

The mural project promotes awareness and serves as a source of community pride and an educational tool. Here’s how initiatives like this can benefit the local area:

1. Encourages conservation efforts – By showcasing the beauty of Eastern Visayas, the mural reminds residents of the importance of protecting these sites and encouraging sustainable tourism and environmental conservation.

2. Supports local artists – Projects like this give artists a platform to engage with the community, fostering a greater appreciation of local art and culture.

3. Inspires sustainable tourism – The mural aligns with Tacloban’s vision of growing tourism in harmony with nature, inviting visitors to enjoy and protect the region’s natural landscapes.

Residents are encouraged to visit the mural and learn more about the region's biodiversity, promoting a sense of shared responsibility for conserving Tacloban’s natural heritage. —iTacloban
