PHILIPPINES—Education Secretary Sonny Angara recently highlighted the critical role of teachers in driving human capital development during the 50th Philippine Business Conference and Expo (PBC&E) on October 23. His address to business leaders underscored how educators are essential for sustainable economic growth, offering insights that can guide community support for teaching professionals.
Angara emphasized the dedication of over 800,000 teachers nationwide, many working in challenging conditions, including remote and conflict-affected areas. For example, teachers from Pag-Asa Island in the West Philippine Sea exemplify commitment and resilience, reminding us of teachers' vital impact on communities, especially in underserved regions.
Key initiatives to support teachers
Recognizing the importance of improving teachers' working conditions, the Department of Education (DepEd) has implemented several initiatives:
- Reducing workloads – Efforts are underway to streamline administrative tasks, allowing teachers to focus more on classroom instruction and student engagement.
- Increasing benefits – Enhancements to teacher benefits are being considered to attract and retain quality educators.
- Curriculum flexibility – Initiatives aimed at providing curriculum flexibility help teachers tailor their lessons to better meet the needs of their students.
Collaboration across agencies
Angara stressed the importance of collaboration among government agencies to enhance human capital development, mainly through programs that support early childhood education and nutrition. By working with the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), DepEd aims to provide comprehensive support to children from a young age.
Educational infrastructure improvements
To address infrastructure gaps, DepEd is also focusing on building more classrooms and providing learners digital tools, such as laptops. These efforts aim to create a more conducive learning environment that fosters educational attainment and prepares students for future challenges.
How communities can help
Community members and local businesses can support these initiatives by:
- Advocating for teacher support – Encourage local government units to prioritize education funding and resources for teachers.
- Participating in educational programs – Engage in or sponsor workshops and training programs that enhance teachers' professional development.
- Volunteering and mentoring – Offer your expertise to schools through volunteer work or mentorship programs for both teachers and students.
The insights shared during the PBC&E highlight the indispensable role of teachers in shaping the future workforce and fostering economic growth. By investing in teachers and supporting educational initiatives, communities can play a crucial part in national development, ensuring a brighter future for the Philippines. —iTacloban (Source: 1)
